Climate talks stumble as protests turn violent
COPENHAGEN - Danish police fired pepper spray and beat protesters with batons outside the U.N. climate conference Wednesday, as disputes inside left major issues unresolved just two days before world leaders hope to sign a historic agreement to fight global warming.

Mt. Kilimanjaro Ice Cap Continues Rapid Retreat
The ice atop Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania has continued to retreat rapidly, declining 26 percent since 2000, scientists say in a new report.
Yet the authors of the study, to be published Tuesday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, reached no consensus on whether the melting could be attributed mainly to humanity’s role in warming the global climate.
Eighty-five percent of the ice cover that was present in 1912 has vanished, the scientists said.

At UN Climate Change Conference, US And China Promise Carbon Emission Reductions
Today, heads of state from around the globe met at the United Nations to face a problem that affects all of their constituencies: climate change. In a day-long conference on global warming, President Obama lamented that the United States was slow to recognize and respond to the problem of global warming, and vowed to move swiftly to counter it. President Hu Jintao of China echoed those statements, listing a four-point plan to combat carbon emissions.

White roofs to fight global warming
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- America should attack global warming by ... painting rooftops and road surfaces white.
Seriously. No kidding.
Among those promoting the idea is Energy Secretary Steven Chu, a big-thinking physicist who has a bully pulpit and influence over billions in research and stimulus funds.
Chu spoke about the idea at a London conference last month while Congress was busy hashing out a complex, 1,400-page bill to cut greenhouse gases.
Whitening the world's roofs and roads would have the same effect on global warming as removing all the world's cars for 11 years, he said.

The bright prospect of biochar
Enthusiasts say that biochar could go a long way towards mitigating climate change and bring with it a host of ancillary benefits. But others fear it could do more harm than good. Kurt Kleiner reports.
Jim Fournier wants to help save the planet, though in a most unlikely way: by burning biomass. At the forefront of a carbon-sequestration technology that proponents say offers a rare 'win-win-win' environmental opportunity, Fournier's company Biochar Engineering in Golden, Colorado, manufactures machines that turn biomass into charcoal, or biochar.

Adaptation Emerges As Key Part Of Any Climate Change Plan
Adaptation. For many in the climate change community, the word has had a traitorous ring, implying that its proponents were giving up on the notion that the world might mitigate the threat of global warming by significantly reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. Adaptation was for quitters.
Not anymore.

Yosemite's giant trees disappear
Climate change appears to be a major cause of the loss.
The revelation comes from an analysis of data collected over 60 years by forest ecologists.
They say one worrying aspect of the decline is that it is happening within one of most protected forests within the US, suggesting that even more large trees may be dying off elsewhere.

Climate Bill Clears House Committee, Vote in August
The House has moved the Markey-Waxman climate legislation out of the Energy and Commerce Committee and the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee is debating its own energy package, which has ramifications on the climate.
The House committee approved the measure 33-25. Mary Bono Mack of Palm Springs, Calif., was the only Republican to support the bill.

Hurricane Forecast Predicts Slightly Milder Season
Forecasters from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration say they are expecting an average Atlantic hurricane season this year, with four to seven hurricanes.
But this year's forecast came with a lot of caveats and a call for the public to pay more attention to the risks posed by rising water, as well as wind and rain.
