Farmers' crops keeping US cool
While cities create a warm bubble known as the urban heat island, most farms have an opposite chilling effect. This "cool farms factor" has lessened the effects of global warming across the entire continental US, and could continue to do so, suggests new research.
It also suggests projects that plant trees to cool the planet need to be approached with caution.

Everyone is predicting growth in this sector, says Obama
Environmentalists and labor advocates have contended for years that environmentally sound policies would create thousands of jobs stockpiling arguments like firewood for the day when someone in Washington would light the match.
On Feb. 17, the Obama administration tossed in $40 billion worth of matches.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama and Democratic lawmakers reached agreement on Tuesday on a legislative proposal designed to stimulate U.S. auto sales, which have fallen to near 30-year lows.

Unknown web: Is the net hurting the environment?
Sending an email across the Atlantic Ocean does not burn any jet fuel, but the internet is not without its own, huge carbon footprint. One estimate suggests it takes a whopping 152 billion kilowatt-hours per year just to power the data centres that keep the net running. Add to that the energy used by all the computers and peripherals linked to it and the whole thing could be responsible for as much as 2 per cent of all human-made CO2 emissions, putting it on a par with the aviation industry.

Straw house beats the shakes in earthquake test
CHEAP houses built from straw bales could dramatically improve building safety in earthquake zones. That's the conclusion from tests in the US in which a simple straw bale house withstood shaking equivalent to a major earthquake.
Originally developed a century ago in Nebraska, homes with straw-bale walls are enjoying a revival in the US and Europe because they use green materials and provide excellent insulation. But the technology could also provide protection in quakes.
